CETUS, A BALEIA, O MONSTRO MARINHO

Meu Projeto
e que possibilitam nossa mente a ir percebendo que existe mais, bem mais, entre o céu e a terra...;

Janine Milward

Olá!

Cetus, a Baleia, o monstro-marinho
as estrelinhas tímidas e ziguezagueantes do Aguadeiro

(em Aguadeiro, Peixes e Peixes Austrinus... e ainda em Rio Eridano)....,

Caro Leitor,

Eu gostaria  de mencionar uma questão interessante:
se o Leitor estiver bem atento,
notará que existe uma discrepância
em termos dos desenhos/das ilustrações
que perfazem a cauda e a cabeça
de Cetus, a Baleia.
(muitas dessas Ilustrações
- algumas mais antigas
e outras mais recentes -
são apresentadas nesta Postagem).

Menkar, a estrela-alpha Ceti, quer significar
Uma estrela brilhante e alaranjada
situada nos dentes da Baleia.
De Al Minhar, o Nariz, O Focinho

Difda ou Deneb Kaitos,a estrela-beta Ceti, quer significar
Uma estrela amarelada
na cauda da Baleia.
De Al Difd al Thani, o Segundo Sapo.

Na carta celeste realizada pelo IAU
(International Astronomical Union)
o delineamento em linhas ligando as estrelas do monstro-marinho
nos traz a impressão de uma inversão.
Da mesma forma,
assim encontramos figurada a constelação Cetus
através a Carta Celeste realizada por Mario Jaci Monteiro.
(e ambas encontradas nesta Postagem)

Quer dizer,
vemos o asterismo formado apresentando a Cabeça e acolhendo
a estrela-alpha Ceti, Menkar.
quer significar cauda (ex: Denebola (estrela-beta Leonis), Deneb (estrela-alpha Cygnus)

e composto pelas estrelas Alpha, Gamma, Zeta2 e Um Ceti.

estrela-alpha Piscis Austrinus,
desse pedaço do céu estrelado.

tecerem o Mito do monstro-marinho ameaçando a vida
da Princesa Acorrentada, Andromeda!

Nesta Postagem, Caro Leitor,
encontre informações sobre Cetus, a Baleia;
sobre Mira, a maravilhosa estrela-omicron variável
(inclusive sua descrição por Richard H. Allen);
sobre o Objeto Messier 77;

Cetus, a Baleia, o Monstro-Marinho,

Exemplos: Mira Ceti, R CarinaeR LeonisChi CygniR Hydrae e R Centauri.

Mira: The Wonderful Star
Credit: X-ray Image: M. Karovska (Harvard-Smithsonian CfAet al.CXC / NASA
Illustration: M.Weiss(CXC)
Explanation: To seventeenth century astronomers, Omicron Ceti or Mira was known as a wonderful star - a star whose brightness could change dramatically in the course of about 11 months. Modern astronomers now recognize an entire class of long period Mira-type variables as cool, pulsating, red giant stars, 700 or so times the diameter of the Sun. Only 420 light-years away, red giant Mira (Mira A, right) itself co-orbits with a companion star, a small white dwarf (Mira B). Mira B is surrounded by a disk of material drawn from the pulsating giant and in such a double star system, the white dwarf star's hot accretion disk is expected to produce some x-rays. But this sharp, false-color image from the Chandra Observatory also captures the cool giant star strongly flaring at x-ray energies, clearly separated from the x-ray emission of its companion's accretion disk. Placing your cursor over the Chandra x-ray image of Mira will reveal an artist's vision of this still wonderful interacting binary star system.

Astronomers using a NASA space telescope, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, have spotted an amazingly long comet-like tail behind a star streaking through space. The star, named Mira after the Latin word for "wonderful," has been a favorite of astronomers for about 400 years, yet this is the first time the tail has been seen.
Galaxy Evolution Explorer--"GALEX" for short--scanned the popular star during its ongoing survey of the entire sky in ultraviolet light. Astronomers then noticed what looked like a comet with a gargantuan tail. In fact, material blowing off Mira is forming a wake 13 light-years long, or about 20,000 times the average distance of Pluto from the sun. Nothing like this has ever been seen before around a star.

This artist's animation illustrates a star flying through our galaxy at supersonic speeds, leaving a 13-light-year-long trail of glowing material in its wake. The star, named Mira (pronounced my-rah) after the Latin word for "wonderful," sheds material that will be recycled into new stars, planets and possibly even life. NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer discovered the long trail of material behind Mira during its survey of the entire sky in ultraviolet light.

The animation begins by showing a close-up of Mira - a red-giant star near the end of its life. Red giants are red in color and extremely bloated; for example, if a red giant were to replace our sun, it would engulf everything out to the orbit of Mars. They constantly blow off gas and dust in the form of stellar winds, supplying the galaxy with molecules, such as oxygen and carbon, that will make their way into new solar systems. Our sun will mature into a red giant in about 5 billion years.

Resolving Mira
Credit: M. Karovska (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA) et al., FOCESANASA
Explanation: Most stars appear only as points of light. Early last year, Betelgeuse became the second star, after our Sun, to have it surface resolved. Later last year, Mira was added to the list. Mira A is a red giant star undergoing dramatic pulsations, causing it to become more than100 times brighter over the course of a year. Mira was discovered to be the first variable star 401 years ago today by David Fabricus. Mira can extend to over 700 times the size of our Sun, and is only 400 light-years away. The above photograph taken by the Hubble Space Telescope shows the true face of Mira. But what are we seeing? The unusual extended feature off the lower left of the star remains somewhat mysterious. Possible explanations include gravitational perturbation and/or heating from Mira's white dwarf star companion

The Tail of a Wonderful Star
Credit: NASA, JPL-Caltech, GALEX, C. Martin (Caltech), M. Seibert(OCIW)
Explanation: To seventeenth century astronomers, Omicron Ceti or Mira was known as a wonderful star, a star whose brightness could change dramatically in the course of about 11 months. Mira is now seen as the archetype of an entire class of long-period variable stars. Surprisingly, modern astronomers have only recently discovered another striking characteristic of Mira -- an enormous comet-like tail nearly 13 light-years long. The discovery was made using ultraviolet image data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite. Billions of years ago Mira was likely similar to our Sun, but has now become a swollen red giant star, its outer layers of material blowing off into interstellar space. Fluorescing in ultraviolet light, the cast off material trails behind thegiant star as it plows through the surrounding interstellar medium at 130 kilometers per second. The amount of material in Mira's tail is estimated to be equivalent to 3,000 times the mass of planet Earth. About 400 light-years away toward the constellation Cetus, Mira is presently too faint to be seen by the unaided eye, but will become visible again in mid-November.

A close-up view of a star racing through space faster than a speeding bullet can be seen in this image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The star, called Mira (pronounced My-rah), is traveling at 130 kilometers per second, or 291,000 miles per hour. As it hurls along, it sheds material that will be recycled into new stars, planets and possibly even life.

In this image, Mira is moving from left to right. It is visible as the pinkish dot in the bulb shape at right. The yellow dot below is a foreground star. Mira is traveling so fast that it's creating a bow shock, or build-up of gas, in front of it, as can be seen here at right.

Mira's Tail There All Along
visibile and ultraviolet views of Mira
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/galex/20070815/g.html

NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer discovered an exceptionally long comet-like tail of material trailing behind Mira - a star that has been studied thoroughly for about 400 years. So, why had this tail gone unnoticed for so long? The answer is that nobody had scanned the extended region around Mira in ultraviolet light until now.

As this composite demonstrates, the tail is only visible in ultraviolet light (top), and does not show up in visible light (bottom). Incidentally, Mira is much brighter in visible than ultraviolet light due to its low surface temperature of about 3,000 kelvin (about 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit).

Star Names — Their Lore and Meaning -,
nos fala bem sinteticamente sobre MIRA:

ο, Variable, 1.7 to 9.5, flushed yellow.

Mira, Stella Mira, and Collum Ceti are all titles for this Wonderful Star in the Whale's neck, the show object in the heavens as a variable of long period and typical of its class.

It was first noticed as a 3d‑magnitude on the 13th of August, 1596, and again on the 15th of February, 1609, by David Fabricius, an amateur astronomer and disciple of Tycho Brahē; but its true character was not ascertained till 1638 by Phocylides Holwarda of Holland, — the first established record of a variable star.

Bayer lettered it in 1603 as of the 4th magnitude, evidently at a time of its diminished brilliancy and without knowledge of its variability; Hevelius, having observed it from 1659 to 1682, inserted it in his Prodromus as the Nova in Collo Ceti; and Flamsteed, numbering it 68, described it as in pectore nova and of the 6th magnitude on the 18th of October, 1691, and again on the 28th of September, 1692.

"This was singular in its kind till that in Collo Cygni was discovered; and the attention it excited among astronomers is detailed in the Historiola Mirae Stellae" of Hevelius in 1662; thus virtually naming it and "commemorating the amazement excited by the detection of stellar periodicity."
Its period, fixed by Bouillaud in 1667 as 333 days, is now given as 331, p165but this is subject to extreme irregularities, — at various times it has not been seen at all with the naked eye for several years consecutively, — and its maxima and minima are even more irregular. While it has been known almost to equal Aldebaran in its light, as it did under Herschel's observations on the 6th of November, 1779, Chandler gives its maximum as from 1.7 to 5, and its minimum from 8 to 9.5. It thus sometimes sends out at its maximum fifteen hundredfold moderate light than at its minimum, and "after three centuries of notified activity gives no sign of relaxation." It is generally at its brightest for about a fortnight; the increase occupying about seven weeks and the decrease about three months. The maximum of 1897 occurred about the 1st of December, when it was a little below the 3d magnitude.

Sir William Herschel wrote of it in 1783 as being of a deep garnet color like μ Cephei.
The spectrum is of Secchi's 3d type, with extremely brilliant hydrogen lines at the time of maximum.

Mira lies almost exactly on the line joining γ and ζ, a little nearer the former star.
ϕ1ϕ2ϕ3, and ϕ4, 5th- to 6th‑magnitude stars, were the Arabs' Al Nithām. In China they were Tien Hwan, Heaven's Sewer. It was near these that Harding of Lilienthal discovered the minor planet Juno, on the 2d of November, 1804, the 3d of these objects found.

c and y, small stars near τ, were the Chinese Foo Chih, the Ax and Skewer.

Discovered 1780 by Pierre Méchain.

Messier 77 (M77, NGC 1068) is a conspicuous spiral galaxy situated in constellation Cetus. With its bright Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), it is the prototype of an active galaxy, and a famous group of these objects called "Seyfert Galaxies," after their discoverer.

When Pierre Méchain discovered this object on October 29, 1780, he described it as a nebula. Charles Messier included it as No. 77 in his catalog on December 17, 1780, and misclassified it a cluster with nebulosity, perhaps because of foreground stars, or possibly mistaking some of its knots for faint stars. M77 is one of the first recognized spiral galaxies, and listed by Lord Rosse as one of 14 "spiral nebulae" discovered to 1850.

This magnificient galaxy is one of the biggest galaxies in Messier's catalog, its bright part measuring about 120,000 light years, but its faint extensions (which are well visible e.g. in the DSSM image) going perhaps out to nearly 170,000 light years. Its appearance is that of a magnificient spiral with broad structured arms, which in the inner region show a quite young stellar population, but more away from the center, are dominated by a smooth yellowish older stellar population.

In this view of the core of galaxy NGC 1068, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope reveals far more detail than has ever been seen from the ground. This picture was taken through a narrow band filter with HST's Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC). The image was then computer processed to show additional detail in the clouds of ionized gas in the nucleus of NGC 1068.
Clouds as small as 10 light-years across are clearly resolved in the central 150 light-years of the core. The clouds are glowing because they are caught in a "searchlight" of radiation beamed out of the galaxy's energetic nucleus, which may contain a massive black hole. A schematic representation of this invisible cone of ionizing radiation has been artificially added to the image to illustrate how radiation is beamed from the hidden nucleus.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has provided an unprecedented, detailed view of highly energetic events in the core of a galaxy 30 million light-years away. The observations are a first step in HST's search for super-massive black holes at the nuclei of active galaxies.
Holland Ford (Johns Hopkins University and Space Telescope Science Institute), Ian Evans, Anne Kinney (Space Telescope Science Institute), Lee Armus and Saul Caganoff (Johns Hopkins University) used the HST's Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) to look into the core of the galaxy NGC 1068. The resulting data will be used to support follow-on observations by the HST's Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) Investigation Definition Team headed by Richard Harms (Applied Research Corporation). The FOS observation will analyze light from deep within the nucleus to help astronomers better understand the dynamics of the "engine" which powers the galaxy's unusual activity.
Located at a distance roughly two thirds of the way to the great Virgo clusters of galaxies, NGC 1068 looks like a normal barred spiral galaxy. However, since the year 1909, the core of the galaxy has been known to be the source of unusual activity, which is made evident by the presence of extremely hot (ionized), fast moving clouds of gas in the vicinity of the galaxy's nucleus. Similar galactic fireworks have been detected at the heart of other galaxies as well, and they are collectively referred to as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN).

HST Reveals the Central Region of an Active Galaxy

http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/1994/07/image/c/

Image of Galaxy NGC 1068, Taken After Hubble's First Servicing Mission

The refurbished HST has provided this outstanding image of the nuclear region of the galaxy NGC 1068.
NGC 1068 is located at a distance of approximately 60 million light-years and is the prototype of a class of galaxies, known as Seyfert Type 2. In active galaxies, typically the core shines with the brightness of a billion solar luminosities, and the brightness of the core fluctuates over the period of a few days implying that the energy is being released from a region only a few light-days in extent. The most likely source for this enormous amount of energy is a "super massive" black- hole with a total mass of 100 million stars like the Sun.
In the case of NGC 1068, previous HST observations (left) have shown a number of hot gaseous clouds ionized or heated by the intense radiation from the nuclear source. A toms of "donut" of opaque dust and gas orbiting the black hole confines escaping radiation to a diverging beam or "cone" of emission.

Glowing in the cosmos at a distance of about 50 million light-years away, the galaxy NGC 936 bears a striking resemblance to the Twin Ion Engine (TIE) starfighters used by the evil Dark Lord Darth Vader and his crew in the epic motion picture Star Wars. The galaxy’s shiny bulge and a bar-like structure crossing it bring to mind the central engine and cockpit of the spacecraft; while a ring of stars surrounding the galactic core completes the parallel, corresponding to the wings of the TIE fighters that are equipped with solar panels. This galaxy harbours exclusively old stars and shows no sign of any recent star formation. Bars such as that observed in NGC 936 are common features of galaxies; however, this one is significantly more marked than average. Although a perfect symbol for the dark side of the “Force”, it is still debatable whether this galaxy is dominated, like most others, by a large amount of dark matter. "Gravitational lensing in the galaxy cluster Abell 370 (captured by the Hubble Space Telescope)" by NASA, ESA, the Hubble SM4 ERO Team and ST-ECF - http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/html/heic0910b.html (direct link). Via Wikimedia Commons - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gravitational_lensing_in_the_galaxy_cluster_Abell_370_(captured_by_the_Hubble_Space_Telescope).jpg#/media/File:Gravitational_lensing_in_the_galaxy_cluster_Abell_370_(captured_by_the_Hubble_Space_Telescope).jpg

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's newly repaired Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) has peered across almost five billion light-years to resolve intricate details in the galaxy cluster Abell 370. Abell 370 is one of the very first galaxy clusters where astronomers observed the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, the warping of space-time by the cluster’s gravitational field that distorts the light from galaxies lying far behind it. This is manifested as arcs and streaks in the picture, which are the stretched images of background galaxies. Ground-based telescopic observations in the mid-1980s of the most prominent arc (near the right-hand side of the picture) allowed astronomers to deduce that the arc was not a structure of some kind within the cluster, but the gravitationally lensed image of an object twice as far away. Hubble has now resolved new, previously unseen details in the arc that reveal structure in the lensed background galaxy. These observations were taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in its Wide Field mode on 16 July 2009. The composite image was made using filters that isolate light from green, red and infrared wavelengths.

Abell 370 is a galaxy cluster located approximately 6 billion light-years away from the Earth (at redshift z = 0.375), in the constellation Cetus. Its core is made up of several hundred galaxies. It was catalogued by George Abell, and is the most distant of the clusters he catalogued.

Gravitational lensing

Abell 370 appears to include several arcs of light, which in fact are mirages caused by gravitational lensing of more distant objects.[3]
In 2002, astronomers used this lensing effect to discover a galaxy, HCM-6A, 12.8 billion light years away from Earth. At the time it was the furthest known galaxy.[4]
In 2009, study in the field of Abell 370 revealed a grouping of background galaxies lensed and distorted by the cluster into an arc with the appearance of a dragon, hence nicknamed The Dragon[5] by NASA scientists.[6] Its head is composed of a spiral galaxy,[7] with another spiral composing the tail. Several other galaxies form the body of the dragon, all overlapping.[8] These galaxies all lie approximately 5 billion light years away.

Supermassive black holes spiralling.jpg

What's happening in the middle of this massive galaxy? There, two bright sources at the center of this composite x-ray (blue)/radio (pink) image are thought to be co-orbiting supermassive black holes powering the giant radio source 3C 75. Surrounded by multimillion degree x-ray emitting gas, and blasting out jets of relativistic particles the supermassive black holes are separated by 25,000 light-years. At the cores of two merging galaxies in the Abell 400 galaxy cluster they are some 300 million light-years away. Astronomers conclude that these two supermassive black holes are bound together by gravity in a binary system in part because the jets' consistent swept back appearance is most likely due to their common motion as they speed through the hot cluster gas at 1200 kilometers per second. Such spectacular cosmic mergers are thought to be common in crowded galaxy cluster environments in the distant universe. In their final stages the mergers are expected to be intense sources of gravitational waves.

Abell 400 is a galaxy cluster which contains the galaxy NGC 1128 with two supermassive black holes (3C 75) spiraling towards merger.
These two supermassive black holes are contained in NGC 1128. The galaxy, microwave radio jets, multi-million degree X-ray producing gas and resultant radio source is known as 3C 75. X-ray source 2A 0252+060 (1H 0253+058, XRS 02522+060) may be some additional or other portion of Abell 400.[3]
The black holes are an estimated 25,000 light years apart, and thus will take millions of years to collide. Should the two supermassive black holes merge, they will form a single super-supermassive black hole.

Mario Jaci Monteiro - As Constelações, Cartas Celestes

Os desenhos formados pelas estrelas
- as constelações -
entre o céu e a terra...;
bem como percebendo que o caos,
vagarosamente,

Quer dizer,
nossa mente é tão infinita quanto infinito é o Cosmos.
